Archimedes & Gary Cooper

Give me a lever long enough and a prop strong enough. I can single-handedly move the world.

-Archimedes

I've always had a hard time fully understanding what Archimedes meant by this until lately. At least I have a meaning of what it means to me. Certain people "move the earth" with the lives they lead.

About 10% of us develop the talents within us that move people to the degree that what we've done while walking this earth continues to do so while we're floating above it.

I was up all night watching Gary Cooper movies. He starred in over 100 movies and with his performances moved the world. Movies such as Pride of the Yankees - 1942, Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, Sergeant York - 1941 and AFarewell to Arms - 1936.

I've come to think of Archimedes' lever as who we are, what our talent is. The prop is our desire and passion to develop that gift until it "moves" people; inspires, motivates, enlightens, educates, humors, makes others' lives better in some way.

As Christmas approaches, it's a good time to reflect on what our "real gifts" are, our real selves. As we watch others open the gifts we've given to them, perhaps we could open our real selves, and give to ourselves and the world our true happiness.

And as that sometimes dreaded New Year's resolution approaches, maybe this year it could be different by promising to work on our real desire to make it happen.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year's Resolution, to YOU! May we be remembered for the lives we're living.
