The Quick Fix is No Fix at All

(These pictures are of what so far has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience between myself and my daughter I. Her teacher had to leave early and her class was split among the other teachers, Bella being sent to mine.

She is an "A" student and I gave her a problem I knew she would have to struggle with. Why? One, I believe struggling with temporary "failure" is critical to becoming permanently successful.

Two, having the courage to struggle and face possible "defeat" in front of others gives others the courage to do the same.

Three, I love and believe in my daughter with all my heart, and teach my students as if they were my own, loving and believing in them with all my heart......and right now the world needs a lot of heart.....miles and miles of heart)

A new study out of London reports that the higher level thinking skills of 14 year-olds are now on par with that of 12 year-olds in 1976. (ABC News)

In effect, our children are two years dumber than they were two decades ago.

The reason given is that our schools are teaching to the test. So over the same time period, while state and national test scores have increased, the ability of our children to think has decreased.

Colleges are now placing less-emphasis on these scores as a basis for acceptance because they measure more a student's ability to memorize information than being able to use it to think at high levels and solve real problems.

And once again, the solution of the quick fix has only been successful in making things worse.

Instead of taking care of the consumer many businesses take advantage of them, the real-estate crisis being a prime example, and all of us suffer as the economy goes south.

Instead of working out to lose weight and developing a vast store of new inner discipline and strength we could use for future challenges and growth, we get liposuction and others surgeries which make us look for other quick-fixes for future challenges.

Instead of developing talents and becoming more in order to get more, we buy more lottery tickets hoping to get more by getting lucky. Yet because we didn't become the type of person who could earn the winnings, 90% of us who win the lottery lose our new wealth because we don't know how to keep it......and we find ourselves more in debt than before "winning" just a few years later.

Instead of becoming our own source of power and confidence, we look to other people and things to tell us we're acceptable and worth something, teaching our children to do the same.

Instead of struggling through the process of learning to see our own inner beauty, we get a face and body lift hoping the outside world will at least see our manufactured outer beauty, and then we'll feel good about ourselves.

Instead of being patient with our children and helping them develop the ability to focus, we put our children on pills to "help" them do it. Why? Because as adults we have chosen to put ourselves on pills of some kind instead of developing the inner strength to have patience with ourselves and, as a bye-product, the ability to help others do it too.

I know I'm not trying to come off as preachy. I also know that I deserve the criticism I receive for risking my health and job by pushing my own limits past the danger point time and again. But I look at what has happened to those around me as a result.

And the world is at risk more than ever, and needs real solutions real fast. Not living fully is not having lived at all. Focusing on keeping your job instead of fully doing your job is not doing it at all......All or nothing.

I notice that when I choose to focus on the higher things, the things that really matter, that's when the things that really matter tend to change for the better.

Things that can't be done ARE done. What "could be" becomes "WHAT IS". Where I used to fail I start succeeding, and where others around me used to fail they start succeeding.

Students who used to tell me they would come find me when they're older and kill me (because I'm making them face their unpleasant reality), now instead focus on making me help them change. Instead of continuing to fail test-after-test, now are open to learning why and beginning to double their scores and earning C's, B's and A's in the process.

Those who used to "succeed" on surface-knowledge tests now are succeeding at higher-level thinking and gaining meaningful knowledge and real-life abilities in the process......All of them hopefully for a lifetime, and all of them hopefully changing the world for the better in the process.

"In the process".....In the process of BECOMING MORE, not less.

From my experience and observation, the quick fix in most cases is no fix at all.

As our world is finally being forced to face increasing problems of economy, ecology, education, terrorism, etc. at the critical level, we are increasingly as a whole developing ourselves into quick fixers turning the current problems into critical crises, while dumbing down the very ones that will be asked to fix what we create.

The "monster needs to be stopped while it's little". Real, healthy education of our young by parents and teachers alike is critical in doing this. But how do we teach what we don't know how to do?

We take on a new role. We take on the role of hero. This is no time for false humility or feelings of unworthiness.

Since the monster of the quick-fix hasn't been stopped in our own lives and now has become big in adults all over the world.....We need to become the heroes of our own lives, to become more than we ever have been so far, growing bigger than and defeating this monster inside of us.

We do this, and we teach our children how to do this.

Our children learn how to do this, and they learn how to create more solutions to more problems instead of creating more and bigger problems needing more and bigger solutions.

And the world does change for the better.....in this process.

Today, today
Do I wake up
more old and gray?

Or do I wake up
determined,
to find a way?

My body has risen,
but has my soul?

Yes!
My spirit is awakened,
and I feel myself
becoming bold.

Today, Today!
What an incredible day!

For I have AWAKENED
on the dawn of this great day!

~ From one fully awakened soul to another,
Embrace today and give it a big kiss!

Run and Run
As Fast As You Can

Find Me Daddy

Look and Look
As Best You Can

Tickle Me Daddy

- Adam & Sofia Stuart, Dec 2007
(Dad, age 40 ~ Sofia, age 5)
*Although we're up North in the cold, Sofia and I found these pictures on my laptop from a few months ago in Florida, and came up with this poem. As I look at her sleeping next to me now, I realize that no matter where we are, true love keeps us warm.....

To My Children

A Christmas hug

From me to you

My heart opens up

And covers you

You'll never know

What a gift you are

Without your love

I couldn't go far

So on this Christmas

And forever more

I give you my all

From Winter to Fall

Merry Christmas 2007

Which Parent Will I Be?

"I got two A's," the small boy cried.
His voice was filled with glee.
His father very bluntly asked,
"Why didn't you get three?"

"Mom, I've got the dishes done,"
The girl called from the door.
Her mother very calmly said,
"Did you sweep the floor?"

"I've mowed the grass," the tall boy said,
"And put the mower away."
His father asked him, with a shrug,
"Did you clean off the clay?"

The children in the house next door
seem happy and content.
The same thing happened over there,
And this is how it went:

"I got two A's,"
the small boy cried,
His voice was filled with glee.
His father very proudly said,
"That's great, I'm glad you belong to me."

"Mom, I've got the dishes done,"
The girl called from the door.
Her mother smiled and softly said,
"Each day I love you more."

Time Together ~ A Father/Daughter Thanksgiving Collaboration

lying here with you

on the floor
by the door

doing nothing

but lying in the sun

how can it be,

this much fun?

~ Dad

lying on the floor
by the door

I wish my time
with you was more

~
Bella (age 9 - who also came up with the poem's title)

It truly is not the amount of moments we're given, but the amount we give to the moments we have.

I give thanks for the moments I have with my children, and have created a year-round Happy Thanksgiving in "our" home.

My children and I wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving...one that lasts all year long and for each moment you give yourself to.

I Think I Like it Here

The wind is blowing gently

Carrying guitar tunes to my ear

Surrounded by friendly people

I think I like it here

A belly full of good food

The beautiful smell of flowers

A great view of Lake Eola

I think I like it here

Shanghai at my feet

Book in my hands

I look up and see the nicest smiles

And I say to myself...

... I think I like it here

Be Safe Today Young Child

I think of you often
Left alone out there on the street

I send you all my love and strength
Yet sit here once again feeling drained and weak

I don't want to hear what a good person I am
For you to be safe I'd have the whole world call me bad

What I did was for you
I gave you everything that I had

I saw how the world told you you were ugly
I saw it and saw right through

I truly saw all you could be
And together we saw the beauty in you

And now the world sees you as ugly again
And I'm so afraid you do too

And I can't see through my tears
calling out to you through clenched teeth

I wish there was a Santa Clause
I wish fairy tales were true

I wish there was a god who would show up and fight
I wish I had been more of a real hero for you

I'm silently screaming for Satan to show himself
So I can grab him by the throat

Love is stronger than the both of us
I learned that last time I damned myself to hell

Hell ISN'T for children

It's reserved for the weak who have given up
And the warriors unafraid to die in the name of love

And until you are finally safe and off the streets
I'm sending myself back there to fight for you

Be safe today young child
And somehow learn to believe in yourself again

I'm baring my soul to the world
Asking everyone to say a prayer for you

~ Your Teacher (Adam Stuart - October 2007)

*This girl is a former student of mine, who made unbelievable progress the year I had her; proving she's MORE than what's she's living now. As I'm watching the last scenes of "Love Actually", and realizing I'm "getting the shit kicked out of me once again for love", I see how it's the only power that can make a difference and save a life, call it what name you will (God, Buddha, Mohamed, Allah, Yahweh, Energy).

Send her as much of this power inside of you that you can, and send it for her to learn to love herself again. Please ask your friends to do the same. There have been proven cases of the power of intention actually making a real difference in the world.

I wish I had time to respond to every single comment, but my reality is with grad school I don't. I will read each one thoroughly, and pass along your intentions to her when I find her.

And thank you.

This is Me

This is me
At my most powerful self

Unfettered by learned fear
Unchained by loss of hope

I awaken each day
To the rays of the new light

To the LIGHT of a child's wisdom
To the creation of my very own LIFE

- Adam Stuart (2007)

I saw this picture on another's post, and didn't think, but just wrote what I felt. And at the exact moment that I hit "Publish Post", my youngest daughter came up from behind me, and seeing the picture, sang in such an angelic voice that the lump in my throat pushed a tear from my eye.

I quickly hit "edit post" and added this:

There's the western way of forcing things, of MAKING things happen. Then there's the eastern way of allowing things to flow and happen "naturally. In children I see the perfect way, of observing the world, seeing the reality of it's beauty, FEELING that beauty inside of them and letting it flow in and back out, thinking only of that, and BEING TRULY BEAUTIFUL SPIRITUAL BEINGS, having human experiences.

Children see what we have gone blind to as adults. They see the reality of the universe, but observe and imitate us as human beings desperately trying to have spiritual experiences.

Surfing Waves of Emotion

......................LIFE EROTIC...........
.............LIFE SUBLIME .................................................
..............................LIFE PSYCHOTIC...................
LIFE DIVINE.........................

.......................................Life and its emotions
.......................................A simple simplistic rhyme

.......................................Not demons to be feared
.......................................Forces from which we hide

......................................They are choices to be made
......................................Empowering waves that we can ride

We can't decide which waves come to us from the ocean of life.
We can only decide which ones we're going to surf.

Love Longing - Crone Wisdom

A friend asked what our obsessions were. I'm paraphrasing my reactive response.

LIVING LIFE before paying the final price ,
Giving up this human experience,
Going down into the ground,
Beginning the climb back up,
To the spiritual realm
From which I came.

Then I read this post by LoVe*addict, and saw in it's truth the foolishness of two things:

1. Looking outside for the love that must first come from within.

2. Not having fun with this wonderful adventure we call life,
afraid to live - instead of living with a lust for life, fully appreciating this experience we have been given as spiritual beings having a human journey.............

and LIVING it FULLY from WITHIN!

Wishing you,

Inner Strength, Inner Harmony,
Inner Happiness, Inner Passion

Enjoy, from LoVe*addict's friend, Moriah:

Love-Longing
Crone Wisdom

by Moriah

You are really in search of yourself, without knowing it. You are love~longing for the love-worthy, the perfect lovable. Due to ignorance you are looking for it in the world of opposites and contradictions. When you find it within, your search will be over.

In Our Now, Forever

In Our Now, Forever
Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
In your eyes I am moonlight dancing,
In your laughter, children at play,
In your arms, the sun rising,
In your kiss, dreams brought to day.

In my eyes you are stars burning,
In my laughter, everyday joy,
In my arms, destiny's yearning,
In my kiss, my Helen of Troy.

In our complexity we are simplicity,
In our separation, together,
In our touch, electricity,
In our now, forever.

This is a beautiful piece of art that I feel compelled to pass on. The photos are by Odyssey Spirit and the poem by Bartoluciano. Enjoy their gifts.....fully. They have them for a reason. After all, we are forever only really in our NOW.

Allow it to put you in this moment of love, and look at the images that play in your head. They are the clues to what you're really looking for, what you're still fearful of, if you're living in the present but emotionally detached, or still living in the past and creating more of what you don't want by living in an overly emotionally reactive state and afraid of the future.

So many people won't make it to the end of this day (@160,000). Be brave, step forward into the moments of today, into the light of all the opportunities and possibilities that exist, waiting for your vision, your heart and your talents to create THE POSSIBILITY into A REALITY.

Be it a new song, a poem or a story, a child protected, an adult enlightened, or humanity more confident and less frightened. You are a human being, who is being asked by the world to be a human BEING. And today is your day to do it. No one else has your unique gifts as only you can uniquely give them.

Forgive yourself and others for the pain of the past, setting them down for now or letting them go entirely. Set healthier, more empowering boundaries for yourself to keep the painful actions from continuing in your life, and allowing only positive thoughts and actions in.

Today is your day. Be brave. Be the real you. The one that came to this world unafraid. If today is your last, please let it end with your face in the sun, arms held out high to the side, not seeking acceptance from your fellow man but giving assistance to him through the explosion of the gifts inside of you.

Explode your best self upon the world. We need you.

A Saturday Morning YALP

A Strong Spiritual SHOUT, A Loud Barbaric ROAR, A Saturday Morning YALP! From Walt Whitman's front door.

(I was responding to an email and just felt like playing with alliteration and rhyme, releasing the stress of waking up late and trying to meet a deadline this am - LIFE KICKS BUTT......as long as you can kick your own).

.......Ahhhh, the battle so often is within for the "Peaceful Warrior".

Whether it's "Yay tho I walk in the valley of the shadow of death" and fearing no evil, or taking on the weight of the world, Kick Your Butt Today! Make things happen. Today will NEVER come again. Greet it with a SHOUT, a ROAR, or a YALP - but greet it. It is your friend, stopping by once in your lifetime to never come again.

Shake it's hand and embrace it. Invite it in to stay. Share a cup of coffee or tea. Get to know it in all its imperfections and beauty. Work together to improve and appreciate your own. Allow it to help you become your most wonderful you, giving the world what only you can give. And at night when it has to go, be able to say,

Tomorrow do thy worst For I have lived today!

Peace, Love & Inner Strength,

Living Sensationally is the Best,

Adam

Give Without Seeking Anything in Return

There is a big difference between an opinionated person and a person with intelligent opinions. One seeks to limit the world according to their views. The other wants to widen the way in which the world can be viewed. Which one are you?

Your world is the size of your mind. How big can you get it? How beautiful and amazing can it be? How much fun can you create in it? How much can get accomplished? What kind of people are in it with you? This last point is crucial. What kind of people are you allowing into your world, giving your time to that you will never get back? Are these people adding to or taking away from your life?

Are YOU adding to or taking away from others lives? This is why being genuine is crucial. You can fool the world by pretending to be something you're not, and pretend to give freely while secretly seeking only to take.

But the wise old Universe can see, and see you are attracting others such as thee, and soon your life is filled with false friends and takers, that only serve to make your life a living hell in the making.

Give to someone today without seeking anything in return. I really think it sends out such strong vibrations of purity at the cellular level that it's picked up by others' cells and sent back.

But it's sent back even stronger, affecting more than just the two people involved. Recent emails and comments I've received have empowered me with perfect timing, and are affecting all those who see them, from the blogpots to MySpace.

When you believe in something (or someone) with your very cells IT HAPPENS, THEY HAPPEN! How else do you explain phenomena like what's been happening with my students and others across the world year after year? It's an emotional storm of belief passed from inside the teacher to the inner world of the student, repeated over and over with EACH one in the room.

As I am in the middle of a battle called grad school finals, I see a bigger battle looming on the horizon, the start of a new school year. We all have our battles coming to us; this is mine. As I prepare myself for a new class of students, it is the incredible comments from incredible people that give me the strength to believe I can once again create a genuine emotional storm of belief in everyone with my very cells, and be intelligent enough to see how to get that fiery storm into the hearts and minds of each one at their very cells.

This is how students become unstoppable, children feel loved, marriages survive, impossible battles are won, and worlds are changed.

Thank you for all those giving freely to me. You are changing my world and the worlds of all I touch, including my grandmother's who was waiting for my call goodnight, felt the good vibrations you've given me, and felt confident that, "Tomorrow's going to be a very good day."
